Choose the right equipment for what you need to film and practice using it in advance. Know your equipment’s limitations and how you can maximize its effectiveness through preparation and proper filming techniques.

Before filming with a camera, always:

  1. Set the correct date and time on your camera.
  2. Increase your camera’s shutter speed or frame rate to ensure a clearer image.
  3. Bring additional, empty memory cards.
  4. Fully charge your camera, bring extra batteries and charger.
  5. Monopod or device to stabilize your shots and help get different angles.
  6. When possible, external microphone to record and headphones to ensure your getting good sound.
  7. Have pen and paper to record essential information.
  8. Detailed map to know where you are filming and safe exit plans.
  9. Memorize or have written and safely secured emergency contact information.
  10. Carry a backup memory card that has ‘dummy’ photos or data that is irrelevant to what you are intending on filming, such as tourist sites.
  11. Know why you are filming, what story you want to tell, and the details and people you need to film in advance.
  12. Always assess the risks to yourself, those you film and the communities you are apart of before you press record. Have a safety and security plan prepared in advance.

Remember: if you can’t run with it, don’t bring it.

Here’s a short video that covers some of the tips above:
