Happy Belated Mother’s Day! Moms are revolutionary, no? They have helped to create change from the smallest to the most extraordinary and innovative ways. (As I wrote this, I remembered this post by WITNESS moms.)
Last week, I asked staff to share mom-themed songs for this playlist. The song list, I think, tells stories about the diverse/complex relationships mothers have with their children. From laments to rated ‘hotness’ this list celebrates what we can or have learned from our moms. Below are some quotes from staff about their song choice.
I wouldn’t exactly call this song “maternal.” More like it keeps me feeling young. ~ Sara about “Pocket Knife” – PJ Harvey
Themes of redemption…and big hair. ~ Claire about “Mama, I’m Coming Home” – Ozzy Osbourne
This song is a perfect description of who I am!! ~ Deenah about “I’m Every Woman” – Chaka Khan
“Shame is a kind of anger turned in on itself. And if a whole nation were to feel ashamed it would be like a lion recoiling in order to spring.” Yvonne choose this Karl Marx quote to reflect on “I’m Living in Shame” – Diana Ross & The Supremes
It speaks to Nina Simone’s audacious power as a musician and is infused with the civil rights fight of her time. ~ Michael about “Sinnerman” – Nina Simone
At 9 million views this song still deserves a standing ovation… it’s why Moms are revolutionary.~ MJ about “The Mom Song” – Anita Renfroe only on the YouTube playlist
