- Human Rights Day Series: Resources for #Video4Change Activists This Saturday marks Human Rights Day, a day to pause and celebrate the rights we all share in common (even though they are not always respected or upheld). It also marks an opportunity for us to reach people who perhaps don't think about human rights daily- as the mainstream media usually gives a few minutes of coverage to the topic.
- The Mozilla Festival and the Importance of a Free and Open Internet Last month, WITNESS was invited to participate in the Mozilla Festival held at Ravensbourne University in London. The festival brought together some of the Mozilla community’s best developers and put them in the same room as some of its most innovative online content creators to collaborate hands on to create new features and build actual working demos. The cry of "Less Yack, More Hack!" served as reminder to keep things concrete and tangible and not to veer off into the theoretical as so often happens at conferences.
- ObscuraCam v1: A Mobile App for Visual Privacy Last week we, along with our our friends and colleagues at the Guardian Project, released the first public beta app from the SecureSmartCam project. ObscuraCam, an Android camera phone application is the result of a 7 month long collaboration between WITNESS and The Guardian Project.
- Amnesty Int’l iPhone App for Human Rights Action Our colleagues at Amnesty International have just announced a new iPhone app called AiCandle which allows people to take action on human rights campaigns directly from their mobile device.
- Human Rights Video, Privacy and Visual Anonymity in the Facebook Age The successful nationwide organizing and subsequent protests in Egypt to oust the 30-year regime of President Hosni Mubarak have in part been facilitated by Facebook. But as media and technology commentators and human rights activists alike are noting, using Facebook for activism is fraught with risks.
- NudgeCam: A Video Coach in Your Phone I love making martians on my iPhone. I have a great, free app and since I'm heading to wedding number six of the summer this weekend, I can testify that it is a great hit with both kids and grandparents.
