- The ICC Renders Its First Sentence: Is Justice Served for Congolese Child Soldiers? The International Criminal Court (ICC) has rendered it’s first ever sentence in the case of Mr. Thomas Lubanga, a Congolese warlord and leader of UPC (Union Patriotique Congolais). Lubanga was convicted, as co-perpetrator, on three counts of war crimes including enlisting and conscripting of children under the age of 15 and using them to participate actively in hostilities in the Ituri region, in northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) between September 2002 and June 2003.
- Precarious Progress: Women Peacemakers Conference Last week from September 29-October 1, I was able to attend the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice’s “Precarious Progress: UN Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security” working conference aimed at examining the progress made by recent UN Security Council Resolutions regarding women and armed conflict.
- Human Rights Discussed at the ICSR Peace and Security Summit Earlier this month, I attended a summit held by the International Centre for the Study of Radicalisation and Political Violence (ICSR). The Peace and Security Summit brought together a great number of policymakers, diplomats, senior officials and experts from across the globe to explore the issue of peace and security in contemporary society.
