Community Complaint Leads to World Bank Conceding Role in Forced Evictions
The municipality of Phnom Penh is not only forcibly evicting communities from land, it is also removing 90% of the city’s major lake to build luxury apartments and hotels. To do this, water and silt are being pumped into Boeung Kak Lake, purposefully flooding nearby homes in several feet of murky water and causing other homes to collapse into floodwater. Approximately 20,000 people are effected.

The Secure Smart Camera App for Human Rights Video
Earlier this year we announced our “Cameras Everywhere” initiative which hopes to address some of the changes happening around human rights video online and on mobile phones. The tools for creating and distributing video are becoming more wide spread and more accessible.

Actions against land-grabbing in Cambodia shared in Africa
At an international conference for African communities facing land-grabbing, LICADHO presented a video showing how communities in Cambodia are resisting forced evictions and land grabbing. The three-day conference, Land grabbing in Africa – Dangers and Challenges, was hosted by Caritas Senegal in cooperation with other groups like, FIAN - that is FoodFirst Information and Action Network.

Thousands At Risk of Losing Their Homes in Accra, Ghana
This week, WITNESS, and other land and housing rights organizations, signed a public statement demanding a stop to the planned forced eviction of thousands in Ghana’s capital city Accra. The signature campaign was organized here at the World Social Forum in Dakar, Senegal.

Using Video to Strengthen Northern Uganda’s Recovery Plan
We are incredibly excited to be working with the Greater North Women's Voices for Peace Network (GNWVPN) as part of our new partnership with the Women's Initiatives for Gender Justice. In December, my colleagues Bukeni Waruzi, Ryan Kautz and I traveled to Kampala, Uganda to train 7 women from the GNWVPN. Read more about that training here.

Calling Volunteers to Translate How-To Videos for Activists
We have been watching events unfold in Egypt through hundreds of videos and photos of people standing-up for freedom and caring for the injured to violent battles and a police van rushing through crowds of citizens, hitting and sending some of them feet in the air. If there ever was a doubt about the power of video to document and shine a spotlight on abuses, I think we can agree that doubt has been shattered.

A recently discussed cable released by WikiLeaks shows that American officials exerted pressure on Germany not to enforce arrest warrants against C.I.A. officers involved in the 2003 kidnapping of Khaled El-Masri.

U.S. Human Rights Record Under Review by the U.N.
This week marks the first comprehensive review of the U.S. human rights record on an international stage. On November 5, 2010 the UN Human Rights Council will question the U.S. about its past human rights record under a process known as the Universal Periodic Review (UPR).
